I have one opaque tooth that ruins my smile.

My teeth are all translucent except for my one front tooth that is opaque. When I was a kid I never had this problem. I look back at photos and both of my front teeth are nice and white. I didn’t have an accident or have any trauma that took place. I have tried whitening my teeth so they match the opaque tooth, but it has failed. I really hate the way this looks, it totally ruins my smile. Would professional teeth whitening work to solve this? I have healthy teeth and I really don’t want to have them shaved down to get porcelain veneers. Can you provide any suggestions?

Gene,

I’m sorry to say that teeth whitening will not help in matching your other teeth to your opaque one. Unfortunately, it may even make your smile look worse off. Whitening is not the answer when you are dealing with uneven color. It actually can work against you to emphasize the unevenness. It will actually make your other teeth look even more translucent.

I think the best recommendation based on what you have described is to consider getting one porcelain veneer or having the one tooth bonded. This will help it to match your others and even out your smile. It is absolutely essential that you find an expert cosmetic dentist to do this kind of work. You shouldn’t need to have much of your tooth shaved. And if you do it it would only need to be about the same thickness of a fingernail and that is so the cosmetic work is blended seamlessly.

Again, I can’t stress how important it is to seek the talents of a true cosmetic dentist because the dentist and the laboratory will need to work together perfectly to mimic the translucency of the tooth. Just make sure you don’t go to your average family dentist down the street. You can get a beautiful result, you just need to find the right cosmetic dentist that is passionate about appearance-related dentistry.
